Te Rau Ponga (The Fern)

Inspired by News Zealand's National emblem the silver fern. The fern is placed by the warrior as part of the ceremony of welcome upon the marae. If you wish to enter the marae you must pick up the fern, the taki, so that all can be assured that you come in peace and your intentions are honourable. The warrior completes the ceremony and clears the way for you to enter and take your place before the tribe. In doing so the fern comes to symbolise, before the warrior and his people, your oath and goodwill. Marae: A traditional and sacred meeting place for both religious and social purposes, the focal point being a meeting house. |
Tiki (Mortal Man)

Inspired by the origins of man The first man of fully mortal form, born to seed the new world. Tane the separator parted the primordial pair, Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother, so that Tiki and those that would follow him could live free of the dark bonds that enveloped the gods in the endless night. The new world bursts forth with new light to light Tiki's mortal journey. Ui mai koe ki ahau he aha te mea nui o te ao? Māku a kī atu he tangata, he tangata, he tangata! Ask me, 'What is the greateset thing in the world?' I will reply, 'It is people, people, people!' Tane Mahuta: The deity of man and forests and all that dwell within. |
Kaitiaki Whanau (Family Guardian)

Inspired by the artists love for his family The whanau (family), nestled within its arms are kept close and safe. This spirit, this kaitiaki, this essence resides amongst them, present in the hearts and minds, working in their dreams and desires. Its voice is heard, providing guidance, care and stewardship throughout their day. This kaitiaki is always there, always present, committed to avoiding misfortune and calamity, so that the whanau may grow and prosper. The journey you make is not made on your own. |
Nga Tai Moana (Ocean Tides)

Inspired by the great migration to Hawaiiki Pacific tides brought us here to Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. Te ika a Maui; the great fish that was conquered by demi-god Maui-the trickster, the land that was rediscovered by the adventurer Kupe as he chased Te Wheke o Muturangi. The Māori people are of the Pacific Ocean in all its beauty and vast space. They migrated here upon the tides of Parata, waves of Hine Moana and winds of Tawhirimatea to populate this rugged cloud cloaked land. Ngaru Wai Moana (Pacific Waves)

Inspired by the rolling waves of Tangaroa and a love of fishing. Rolling over and under and over again. The waves of Hine Moana bare many tales, of Maui, of Kupe, of the migration and many more. Tawhirimatea, the wind child whips at their peaks and Tangaroa the lord of the ocean moves the ceaseless tides. These conditions produce the waves that bare these fables of an adventurous people and the journeys across rippled tides and churning seas. Raperape (Spiral Pattern)

Inspired by the tattooed spiral patterns worn by the Māori warrior. The intertwined manaia are a play on the Māori world view of duality and synergy. Night and day, light and dark, male and female, beginning and end can all be explained within the markings of those that bare this pattern. Ever evolving, ever changing each one making way for the other as they cycle through their cosmic dance. Manaia: A spiritual guardian against evil, shown in a side profile-half being in this world and the other in the spiritual. Its form is usually represented in a figure 8 formation with a bird shaped head and beak, the body usually as a serpent, bird or human form. |
